Gerry, Elbridge - ALS as Governor of Massachusetts (1744-1814) Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, U.S. representative from Mass. (1789-97), member of the XYZ mission to France in 1798, governor of Mass. (1810-12), and fifth Vice President of the United States (1813-14), serving under James Madison. Autograph letter signed "E. Gerry" as governor of Mass., one page, 9 x 7½", Cambridge, Feb. 5, 1811. To Hon. Mr. Mondom, regarding "interfering claims of the eastern lands" and asking for "information in regard to the claims under the Plymouth company, Drown, Brown, Tappan & the Indians…" Very good; light soiling and a few thins; reinforced with japan paper on verso. In 1812, the year after he wrote this letter, Gerry signed into law a redistricting plan designed to keep his political party in power; this plan is still called gerrymandering. Estimate $600 - 800
