Clayton Pond. "Set of Chairs" Suite and Colophons Page. Clayton Pond (b. 1941) was among the first artists to employ silkscreen printing in a fresh, distinctly personal way. His limited edition silkscreen prints are immediately recognizable for their bright, cheerful colors with a shine as if the inks were still wet. But what is truly impressive is the high number of colored inks used some having up to twenty separate layers.

This colophons page for the "Set of Chairs" suite was written in the artist’s own hand and silkscreen printed. A copy was included with each set of six prints. It describes in detail how the artist revisited his classic chair image from 1966, and used it as the basis of an in-depth study of color relationships.
From the artist’s comments in the colophon page: "Each of the Chair prints in this suite contain five color elements. The relationship of the two predominant colors, one relatively warm in feeling and the other cool, generate visual tension by flipping the space between the psychological positive and negative areas. The other chromatic innuendos in each image act primarily as accents to clarify the basic encounter and, or, to increase the visual energy by exciting optical vibration. Through studied selection and juxtaposition of the colors, each chair develops unique energy characteristics and acquires its own personality. Together they make music!"
