Anastasius I, 491-518 AD. Gold Solidus (4.47 g), Constantinople mint, struck 491-498 AD. Very rare variety with cross on the helmet. Bust three-quarters facing, helmeted and cuirassed, holding spear and shield; small cross on helmet. Reverse: Victory standing left, holding long jeweled cross, star at right. Officina I. SBC 3; DOC 4a; MIB 4a var. Struck on generous flan -- the centers just a tiny bit soft. Highly lustrous fields; evidence of recutting to CONOB in dies. Very pleasant style for the type. Superb Extremely Fine.
