Lot 2853

Great Britain. Silver Britannia Groat, 1838. Victoria Young Head. S-3913. First year of this type for this monarch. Not a lot of people collect these worldwide, but their popularity seems to be steadily growing as both an odd denomination and a coin which is, in truth, generally quite rare in high grade. Few survived their intended purpose, which was use in such Royal Navy seaports as Malta, Gibraltar, and elsewhere in the Mediterranean; not to mention these coins' popularity at issue up in Scotland. The cataloguer knows of several collectors intent on owning complete date sets in high grade, and this goal is obtainable at low cost, although the effort to locate each coin means it takes time. A lovely original Gem coin, sharply struck and having particularly pretty golden gray iridescence. A tiny scratch connects to a diebreak on the queen's neck. NGC graded MS-66.
Estimated Value $150 - 200.
The Cheshire Collection.

Realized $138
