Florence Nupok Malewotkuk: The Grandma Moses of the Bering Sea. Florence Nupok Malewotkuk (1906-1971), who also went by the name Florence Chauncey, was a Siberian Yupik artist known for her drawings of native Eskimo culture, scenes of local wildlife, and documentation of native tattoos. Her "somewhat naive" style earned her the title of "Grandma Moses of the Bering Sea." She was also a skilled artisan of beaded items such as sealskin Mukluks, toys, and slippers. Nupok's artwork has been exhibited across the United States and is in the permanent collection of institutions including the University of Alaska, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.

This lot contains a scrapbook in a binder of letters between Florence and Zena Holman, who appears to have been a very good friend of Florence's. Within the binder is also a folder of an original story hand written with drawings by Florence from 1943. It is inscribed with "Drawn by Florence, Nupok. / To Her Friend / Mrs Zena G. Holman". Included is a box of photographs and negatives of Florence's artwork with a few of what may be Florence's family. Finally there are two drawings by Florence on some sort of vinyl sheets or photostat. Estimated Value $200 - 400

Realized $124
