Buchanan, James -- Early ALS to General Sam Houston (1791-1868) 15th President of the United States (1857–61). Autograph letter signed "James Buchanan" as a U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania, one page, 9½ x 8", Mercersburg (PA), July 30, 1826. Addressed to General Sam Houston, who was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee, introducing Mr. Talbot Martin, a young gentleman from Lancaster. "He has been regularly brought up to the mercantile business under one of the best merchants in this state & now intends seeking his fortune in the west. It is therefore with pleasure I give him a letter of introduction to you. Any attentions which you may think proper to bestow upon him will be gratefully acknowledged & appreciated." Fine. Matted with the transmittal envelope, addressed to Houston in Nashville, Tennessee and docketed in Houston's hand, and with a color portrait of Buchanan. The next year Houston would become governor of Tennessee. Estimate $800 - 1,000
