Lot 2406

Calabria, Taras, c. 415-390 BC. AR Fourrée Didrachm (or Fourrée Nomos; 7.72 g). Taras riding left on dolphin, holding aphlaston. Reverse: Horseman dismounting left; below, lambda. Fischer-Bossert 338; Vlasto 309 (this reverse die); SNG ANS 873. Light marks. Choice Very Fine.

The obverse and reverse dies were exchanged as to position at striking, just like the ANS specimen. Notice also that, within this period, a good number of existing specimens are heavily scratched in order to discover if the coin is solid silver. Fourrées are pieces struck in antiquity to deceive the marketplace. As in this example, fourrées have a copper or base-metal core and a silver jacket.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

Realized $276
