Sale 109

Lot 238

1794 S-34 R5+ AG3. A point sharper but there are two dull digs at LI in LIBERTY plus a few dozen tiny ticks scattered over both sides. Otherwise the planchet is smooth and the toning is an attractive glossy medium brown with traces of darker chocolate in protected areas. The date is not strong but it is complete and easily readable and about 90% of the legends remain visible. Extremely rare LDS, Breen state IV, with a cud break connecting the top of the cap to the rim in addition to the earlier small cud break over the adjacent L. When this cent was sold in the 2016 EAC sale it was called an earlier state with a retained cud at the top of the cap. We disagree. About a half dozen examples are known with the full cud break of state IV, and the finest of those grades only VG7. A great opportunity for a die state specialist. Estimate Value $800 - UP
