Lot 235

1850 N-7 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red mellowing to light steel brown with 40% of the obverse and 75% of the reverse showing mint red. Satiny and very attractive, nearly mark-free. The only defects are a tiny planchet flake on the jaw (as struck) and a small spot of slightly darker toning (not carbon) over the right side of star 3. The reverse is flawless, a solid gem in every respect. MDS, die state b, with minor die flowlines covering the obverse fields. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census. A variety that is relatively common in mint state but this is a particularly nice one. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; 7 finer: 5 in 65, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66. Estimated Value $1,250 - UP
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 1/27/2004:1557-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (lot ticket included).
