Lot 221

1803 S-262 R3 PCGS graded AU53. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel with traces of mint luster in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth except for a shallow layer of reddish verdigris or scale in protected areas around the hair ribbon, another hidden in the hair at the shoulder, and a hint of microscopic roughness in the field near the dentils over the tip of the bust. Otherwise the only marks are a dull, light but relatively fresh scratch near the dentils off the chin. The reverse is choice except for a few microscopic pinpricks on the R in AMERICA. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, with a long die line up through the bust and clear clashmarks on both sides. The repunching on the M in AMERICA is obvious. Not evaluated by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net EF40+. The finest in both census lists grades VF35, so this piece appears to be the finest known of the variety. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Heritage 9/6/2012:3403.
