Lot 220

1803 S-261 R2 Large Fraction PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Lustrous medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and a puff of darker olive brown toning at the lower curls. Sharply struck and quite attractive. The only marks are a few light nicks in the field before the portrait, none visible without the aid of a glass. E-MDS, Breen state II late. A die crack arcs from the rim up between the 1 & 8 and through the shoulder and hair until it fades away just short of the curl below the hair ribbon. Graded AU55 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#1, his photo #23201. Our grade is AU58. Comes with a great provenance (the earlier portion of which has been updated since the June 2000 auction). The attribution and C. D. Smith-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; none finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP
