Lot 2098

German States - Hesse-Cassel. Brakteat, ND. Schütz-76 (under Heinrich I). 0.53 grams. Otto, 1308-1328. Circa 1310/1320. Crowned lion. Very Rare. About Extremely Fine.

Brakteats were very primitive coins issued in the high Middle Ages. The typical brakteat was small and thin, and had an image on just one side. The image was extremely crude. Compare this to the great artistic masterpieces of Roman and Greek coins more than a thousand years earlier, and one can see how far Europe had retrogressed.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,800.
