Lot 2038

Syria, Uncertain mint. Æ (4.28 g), 3rd century AD. Ram leaping left. Reverse: Scales above three pellets in field. Butcher 11; Weiser 1 (Nektanebo II). Rare. Beautiful earthen-green patina. Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $300 - 400
Weiser attributed this type to the Egyptian Pharaoh Nektanebo II, but find evidence suggests these come from northern Syria or perhaps Commagene. Butcher notes that the leaping ram has stylistic affinities to some issues from Antioch of the 3rd century AD. Another tradition sees these small bronzes as tokens struck to celebrate remembrance in the Jewish faith, with the ram (Ares) representing Passover, the scales (Libra) representing Yom Kippur.
