Lot 1897

1869-S. NGC graded AU-55. Light golden toning on both sides. Only 6,430 minted. Exceedingly choice surfaces with original luster and attractive warm gold toning at the edge. A high-grade example of this "Very rare" (Breen) issue, the same writer adding: "Prohibitively rare EF." Much luster is still evident in protected areas as well as out in the open fields where circulation wear first makes its presence known.

Date logotype thinly impressed into the die and slightly high. Reverse with tiny S mintmark also lightly impressed into the die, left of and about even with the lowest feather tip. For a change, the left side of the ribbon with IN GOD WE TRUST is sharply defined. Bold feather definition and a complete shield on this often weak side of the $10 denomination. Pop 9; 4 finer, 3 in 58, 1 in 61 (PCGS # 8656) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,500.
