1865-S, 865 over inverted 186. PCGS graded Fine-15. A nice pleasing problem-free example. Just honest wear. The inverted date is very clear with a glass, particularly so on the upside down 1 underneath the 5. The S mintmark is almost comically large when compared with later or earlier versions, evidently the San Francisco Mint wanted to be noticed in this particular year! With a mintage of 16,700 pieces, few 1865-S Eagles are found in any grade, particularly so when the one considers that the mintage is divided between the regular issue and this much scarcer inverted date variety (PCGS # 8643) .
