Lot 189

1798 S-167 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair. PCGS graded AU-55. Frosty steel and chocolate brown. Satiny flowline luster covers both sides of this cent and it has mint state eye appeal in spite of a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a spot of lighter golden tan toning in the field below the lower end of the hair ribbon and a couple dull nicks well hidden on the bust tip. LDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on both sides, a strong cud break connecting the first T in STATES to the rim, and thin rim cud breaks over NI and TE in UNITED (in the latest state the cud at TE extends to over the adjacent D). Noyes graded AU55 and tied for CC#4, his photo #21856. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is AU55. A beautiful coin and a neat die state. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 4 finer in 58. (PCGS # 36071) Value $10,000 - UP
