Hancock, John (1737-93) First Signer of the Declaration of Independence; President of the Continental Congress (1775-77); first and third Governor of Massachusetts (1780-85, 1787-93). Partly-printed Document Signed as Governor of Massachusetts, one page, 13¼" x 14¼", n.p., 17 July 1787. Countersigned by John Avery as Secretary. Appointing "Thomas Sprout Gentleman…Lieutenant of first company in the fourth Regiment & in the first Brigade of the fifth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth, comprehending the Counties of Plymouth, Barnstable Bristol, Dukes County of Nantucket…." Fine; light toning, a few tiny holes and edge splits at folds Printed on laid paper with a "Pro Patria" watermark underneath Hancock's beautiful, strong signature. The paper seal is intact and in excellent condition. Ideal for display.
