Lot 184

1826/5 N-8 R2 VF20. VF-20. Overdate 6 over 5. Sharpness at least EF45 but this piece was pickled in acid and then retoned frosty dark olive and steel. The only mark is an arcing depression from star 4 to the tip of the chin and down to the bust tip, perhaps where this cent was touching another large cent while in the mild acid bath. Once upon a time large cents were intentionally placed into pickle barrels to help keep the pickles nice and green. I doubt the USDA would approve of such a practice now, but it might account for the number of acid-etched large cents we encounter today. Sometimes these cents are so thin and distorted from the experience that they may have been rejected as large cents in the marketplace following a proper rescue. Anyway, this piece retains relatively sharp details and there are traces of the undertype 5 inside the top of the 6 (although there is some uncertainty regarding whether or not this is a true 6 over 5 overdate).
Estimated Value $200-UP.
Ex Loye Lauder, William Doyle Galleries 12/15/83:409 (as MS60)-Tony Terranova-Jack Collins 2/8/84.
