Franklin, William -- Document Signed as Colonial Governor of New Jersey (1731-1813) Last (13th) Colonial Governor of New Jersey (1763-76); acknowledged illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin. Manuscript document signed "W:m Franklin" as Colonial Governor of New Jersey, one page, 15½ x 12½", Council Chamber, Oct. 23, 1770. "An Act to Naturalize Frederick Outgelt, Leonard Nymaster, Peter Lupp, John Bower, Lawrence Eykeinier, George Obert, Peter Obert and John Irick." They were required to "profess the protestant Religion" as part of becoming citizens of the colony. Peter Kemble and Stephen Crane both signed as Speaker of the House of Assembly. Franklin signed at the lower right edge. Very attractive; small fold separations at left margin, else fine. William remained a Loyalist throughout the Revolution, causing an irreparable rift with his famous father. In 1782 he went into exile in Britain, where he lived until his death. Estimate $300 - 400
