Lot 1797

1888. PCGS graded Proof 62 Cameo. Lovely golden toning on both sides. In all likelihood, 150-175 coins are known today out of an original mintage of 291 Proofs. This date is also noted for an unusual "halo effect" seen around Liberty. One has to suppose, juding how Proof dies are made and planchets prepared and struck, that this is a result of porosity in the die and therefore is not a defect, as has once or twice been claimed in the past. A showy coin with only light hairlines.Pop 1; 26 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 88052) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.
