Lot 176

1848 N-27 R2 PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty red mellowing to light steel brown with at least a third of the planchet showing red thanks to an old dipping. The toning looks natural, good enough for the graders at PCGS, and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice, especially on the reverse that is lustrous. The only marks are a very thin diagonal nick on the cheek and a small spot of darker toning (not carbon) in the field right of the inner curl. Nicely struck with radial lines in most of the stars. MDS, die state d, with several die cracks on the reverse. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64, 1 in 65. Estimated Value $350 - UP
