Lot 175

1848 N-26 R5 PCGS graded AU50, CAC Approved. Frosty tan and light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. An attractive cent that has only light wear on the highpoints and no distracting marks. The notable marks are a light vertical scratch right of star 1, two small nicks on the bottom edge of the jaw, and a dull rim nick over the U in UNITED. There is some loose dirt in protected areas and a proper bath could bring out more of the mint frost. MDS, die state b. The die lines at ONE CENT do not connect and the horizontal line through the end of the wreath stem is not present. Our grade is EF40, CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 4 finer: 1 in 55, 1 in 58, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. Estimated Value $900 - UP
Ex Robert E. Matthews 10/1986-J. R. Frankenfield, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/17/2001:1488-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (includes the Frankenfield lot ticket).
