Lot 167

1797 S-122 R5+ VG10. Sharpness EF40 but there are significant contact marks on both sides. The strongest marks are in the field behind the curls and hair ribbon and along the rim over UNITED ST, but there are a few more scattered elsewhere on both sides. The planchet is smooth, unaffected by any traces of corrosion or verdigris. The toning is an attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate mixed with a few small swipes of darker olive brown on the reverse. Great detail, clearly the sharpest example known of the die variety, but the contact marks are a serious distraction. EDS, Breen state I, prior to any die cracks. Estimated Value $1,500-UP

Realized $920
