Lot 1492
1878 Shield Nickel. Proof 64. This is one of the early die states which shows the final 8 engraved over a 7. Discovered by Walter Breen in 1973. This die was later polished to produce additional proofs, which removed traces of the final 7. Scarce and always in demand as an overdate proof issue.
