French Royalty: Includes Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis XIX, Napoleon III Signed Manuscripts. Collection of nine items, five of them signed by French kings: Louis XVI (reigned 1774-93, executed by guillotine), 1785 DS ordering payment to a soldier; Louis XVIII (reigned 1814-24), 1791 DS; Charles X (reigned 1824-30; he abdicated), 1798 DS. Louis Antoine (reigned less than 20 minutes as Louis XIX), 1817 PPDS. Napoleon III (first president of France, 1848-52, and last French monarch (1852-70), 1872 ANS written from exile in England, asking Mr. Sturgis about the new Loan of the City of New York. Also included are an LS by Louis Philippe II, duc d'Orléans; an LS by Charles Ferdinand, duc de Bérry; and an endorsement by Louis Joseph, Prince of Condé on a 1785 document with secretarial signature of Louis XVI. Additionally, two letters signed by: Pierre Louis de Blacas (sec. of state during 1st Restoration), 1814 LS; and Jean Hyde de Neuville, 1819 LS as Minister to the United States.
