Lot 1444

1924-D. PCGS graded MS-63. Light golden toning. A scarce date and mint which is seldom found at all in any grade. Despite a prodigious mintage, precious few of these are known today. Estimates range from just over 1,000 pieces to maybe 1,500. The balance were melted in the 1930s. Hence any 1924-D double eagle is quite a challenge to locate. The Denver Mint coins, like those of San Francisco, seemed to find their way into the melting pots with great efficiency while those of Philadelphia at least had a fighting chance to be sent over to Europe to escape the melting pots here and survive until World War II was resolved. The European coins remain the primary source of Saint Gaudens double eagles, but the D and S mint coins are poorly represented from this source. Thus most D and S mint double eagles survived by happenstance here in this country (PCGS # 9178) Estimate Value $7,000 - 7,500

Realized $5,875
