Lot 1427

Imperial Russia. Silver Overlay Icon by Morozov St. Petersburg. A lovely painted icon, 6.75" high by 5.75" wide, by the Morozov firm of St. Petersburg, ca. 1899-1910, with workman's initials, St. Petersburg silver mark and Morozov imprint at bottom. It depicts a religious legend portraying Mary and St. Nicholas at right, admonishing the kneeling priest at left for having improperly placed a steel cross on the church steeple, as Christ's Cross was made of wood. At upper left we see the priest holding the improper cross tumbling groundward. The beautifully designed and nicely toned silver overlay panel in relief and pierced to allow viewing of the painted areas showing the faces and hands of the figures. A handsome work in very good condition.
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,800.

Realized $2,220
