Lot 1416

A 2-piece lot of Sumerian Cuneiform Texts. 1) Part of the rim of a large stone bowl bearing the end of a dedicatory inscription in Sumerian, ca. 2500-2350 BC. The script is an early linear version of cuneiform typically used by the ruler of a given town who had consecrated his life to the service of the g-d. The cuneiform reads "…for his life he gave." Quite rare for so early an example of writing. The cuneiform is light but discernible. Measures: 7.5 X 6.5 cm.

Published in Writing and Lettering in Antiquity by Charles Ede, Ltd., London, October 1989, Number 1.

2) An extremely fine clay tablet inscribed on both sides with seven lines of Sumerian cuneiform, ca. 2060-2010 BC. The text is a letter translated as: "Speak to Lala. Tell Ribagada to hand over the 3 gur of barley from the interrupted offerings. He must not object." Cuneiform letters are nice and crisp. Choice Condition Measures: 4.5 X 4.5 cm.
