Lot 1408

Bogart, Humphrey - Silver Drinking Chalice. German silver drinking chalice engraved, "Bogey's Chalice / Love, Vera," 5 7/8" high and 3" in diameter across the base and the lip. The chalice is decorated with a German coin (3 marks) featuring Kaiser Wilhelm II, which is incorporated into a raised, floral, arabesque design encircling much of the bowl. The engraving is in the area of the bowl without decoration. The chalice is obviously much used; one area of the lip is dented. The "Vera" who gave Bogart the chalice was Verita Peterson Thompson. She claimed that she was Bogie's lover, friend, and confidante, as well as his toupee-maker and hairdresser. Bogie was married to Mayo Methot when he and Vera (Bogie called her "Pete") met in 1942. Bogie would often come to Vera's house in Burbank and doubtlessly used the chalice there. It was part of Vera's estate when she died; a letter of provenance from Richard Wilson of Norma's Jeans is included. Also accompanied by a copy of the book, Bogie and Me that Verita (Peterson) Thompson wrote about her relationship with Humphrey Bogart. A very personal "Bogie" memento.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
