Don Juan of Austria (1547-1578). Cast Silver Medal, 1573. Capture of Tunis from the Turks. Armored bust left with Order, high collar and ruff, leg: IOANNES AVSTRIAE CAROLI V FIL AET SV ANN XXIII. Reverse; Neptune strikes Turk with trident, to right Turks flee, to left ships in the Bay of Tunis, leg: VENI ET VICI. 41 mm, by Giovanni V. Meloni (BM G3FD.310, Forrer pg.19; Attwood 989; Borner 939). Very Rare Contemporary cast. In NGC holder graded MS 61. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
Despite Don Juan's success in October 1573, Tunis was lost again to the Turks ten months later.
