Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 5

Lot 1342

1854-D $5 Liberty. Sharpness of MS-60 but a seawater coin. Found in a hoard of these that was recovered from the ocean floor, hence the surfaces show some minor water action which softens the mint surfaces somewhat. Strong D mintmark on the reverse. There is a short scrape on the right wing of the eagle into the field to the two upper arrow points. Well struck for the date, although weak on the eagle's neck and a few of the upper curls on Liberty as well as most of the dentils. Salvaged in 1972, Breen says little else about the source of these.

Realized $1,840
