Lot 1297

1859-O. PCGS graded AU-55. A rare and low mintage New Orleans issue, struck on the cusp of the Civil War breaking out in 1861, and no doubt survived in high grady by being saved by someone lucky enough to do so. Precious few have come down to us today from this date and mint, and this is certainly one of the finer ones we've handled. Glorious rich greenish gold in color, with mint fresh luster and smooth limited wear on the uppermost points only. Liberty's face and cheek are clean in terms of handling, and so are the surrounding fields. Lightly toned. Some luster visible. A highly desirable example of this elusive date and mint, worthy of any advanced collection of these popular double eagles. Only 9,100 struck, with 75 to 100 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 7; 8 finer, 5 in 58, 1 in 58+, 2 in 60. (PCGS # 8927) Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000
