Lot 129

(1789) Washington Inaugural Button, Eagle & Star Type, Albert WI-12C F-VF. Glossy dark olive and steel brown. The surfaces are covered with uniform light roughness but there are no marks or traces of verdigris. The designs are clear and the original shank for mounting on clothing is intact. Probably recovered from soil, as are most of the known examples. Another important piece of early American history, although we can find no documentation proving these were actually worn during the inaugural celebrations for President Washington. Diameter 34.5 millimeters, weight 102.6 grains.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
