Sale 8

Lot 1289

1888/7 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded Good-6. This is one of the rarest overdates in United States numismatics. Apparently, the obverse die broke early, forming a large die cud over UNITED, which terminated the obverse die use. This overdate was discovered by James F. Ruddy around 1970, and very few have turned up in the last 30 years. PCGS, for all their years of grading have only recorded two coins graded in the VG-VF grade range, with 3 graded higher. PCGS does not report coins graded below VG in their Population Reports, so this piece just misses recording there by a single grade point. The tail of the 7 is distinct below the last 8 in the date, confirming the overdate.
To show how rare this overdate is, none have been auctioned in the last 5 years, and we're not even certain how far we'd have to go to locate a sale! With the extremely high interest in Indian cents, and in particular the various die varieties, we expect significant interest when this small group of 1888/7 overdates crosses the block. This is the best of the three coins offered, so bid accordingly. It is estimated that between 33 and 64 exist by The Cherry Picker's Guide so don't expect to find one of these unattributed.
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

Realized $978
