Lot 1238

1860-D. Large D. PCGS graded AU-53. Mostly well struck in light honey color gold. Plenty of mint luster remains, and the surfaces are attractive. The strike is better than often seen, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's neck feathers. A tough issue to find at all, especially so this close to new. A specialist's coin not only for the grade and rarity, but for the rich history of this famed mint. Stuck only months away from the outbreak of the Civil War. Only 14,635 struck. Pop 3; 5 finer with 3 in 55, 2 in 58. (PCGS # 98286) Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

Realized $5,520
