Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 112

Lot 1214

1846-D, D over D. PCGS graded AU-50. Nicely struck with plenty of golden luster present. A small mark on the cheek and a few scattered marks on the reverse are the only detractions worthy of mention. This variety with the boldly repunched mintmark is clear to the unaided eye, and is included in most numismatic publications and is collected along with the regular mintmark 1846-D issue. Notably the D over D reverse was polished up in late 1846 early 1847--removing the D which was placed too high--and this die was then used to strike the 1847-D half eagles (PCGS # 8229) Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

Realized $3,120
