Lot 1213

1896-O. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty white. Scarce date. The 1896-O is one of the most intractable Morgan Dollars to find with any degree of eye appeal, luster, and original surfaces. Collectors will search an eternity to locate a suitable one. Most of the remaining coins from the 4.9 million mintage (many were likely melted in 1918) show signs of circulation signs, and Mint State examples tend to be covered with heavy abrasions, the luster "lackluster," and the coins poorly struck. This piece has rich, coruscating mint frostiness with very few abrasions present. The striking is, as expected, somewhat shallow in the center of each side, this accounting for the MS63 grade designation, but all in all it is three steps better than most other Mint State examples being offered currently (PCGS # 7242) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Realized $6,463
