1850s Lilliendahl Fire Works Rocket Advertising Cover Franked with Swarts' Local Post Stamp, very rare. Striking cover bearing Gustavis A. Lilliendahl, Manufacturer of Fire Works, N.Y., advertising cachet with rocket motif franked by (1¢) red Swarts' City Despatch Post, NY local post stamp (Scott #136L9) and tied by Swarts' Post office Chatham Square Jan 14 oval cancel. Cover also bears an additional strike of this cancel and also bears 'PAID SWARTS' handstamp. Lilliendahl along with whaling Captain Thomas Welcome Rays built a whaling rocket harpoon that was modified to create the famous California Whaling Rocket Harpoon, an example of which is in the Smithsonian. Back flap neatly removed. Fabulous and fine cover that complements any collection of rocket mail, rocket thematic, advertising or US local post. Estimated Value $800 - UP
