Sheridan, Philip H -- ALS to General Sherman Reporting on Forced Removal of Native Americans (1831-1888) Union major general and Indian fighter. Autograph letter signed "P.H. Sheridan," 3¼ pp, 6½ x 5", Chicago, June 11, 1881. To "My dear Genl [William T.] Sherman," two years before Sheridan would succeed Sherman as Commanding General of the Army, a position he would hold for the rest of his life. Sheridan reports on the on-going forced removal of Native Americans from their lands to reservations. In part: "Military affairs are running smoothly in this division. The Indians at Buford came down to Standing Rock [Reservation] without any trouble and I presume those at [Fort] Keough will follow suit. They have made some protests, but when the time comes will go quietly. There has been considerable murmuring among the Utes but a good sized force…diminished their resistance to the Commissioners & their plans. The latter body is now on the move for the new agency & Reservation. New Mexico…is the Depot of the Platte. The extension of the North Pacific railroad to Glendin Creek will probably make considerable changes in the lines of transportation in the upper country & I am going out to the end of the road…with General [Alfred] Terry to see whis is best to be done." Uneven toning on first and last page; mounting strip on last page affects a couple of letters in the docket. Pages 3 and 4 are written horizontally. Estimated Value $750 - UP
