Southern California History -- 1867 Quit-Claim Deed Signed by Phineas Banning, "The Father of the Port of Los Angeles." Manuscript document signed "Phineas Banning," 1½ pages, 17 x 10½", Los Angeles, Oct. 31, 1867. Deed recording the sale of two parcels of land by Banning to Edward N. McDonald for $6,000. Besides operating a freighting business, Banning (1830-85) operated a stage coach line between San Pedro and Wilmington and between Banning, CA (named in his honor) and Yuma, Arizona. During the Civil War, he ceded land to the Union Army to build a fort at Wilmington, the Drum Barracks; he was appointed a brigadier general of the First Brigade of the militia and used the title for the rest of his life. Fine condition. Housed in a custom-made folio. Estimate Value $200 - UP
