Lot 1123

Mexico - Republic. 8 Reales, 1824-Do-RL (Durango). Eliz-175; KM-376.1. 26.74 grams. Defiant snake type. Hooknecked-eagle, left, holding looped defiant snake. Reverse: Liberty Cap, rays behind. Exceptional strike for this series -- the body in fairly high relief. Choice fields and fairly even medium to deep toning.

Rare defiant snake type; this being one of the finest examples known. NGC graded MS-64.

The ancient Aztec symbol of victory, the eagle clutching a snake, was adopted as the symbol on most Republican gold and silver coins. For the first two years, 1823 and 1824, the eagle would face left, and bend its neck. Later, the eagle would face right, with an unbent neck. The coins of the first two years is known as the "hookneck" type, and are highly sought after.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

Realized $28,750
