Lot 111

1788 New Jersey Maris 50-f Rarity-3 PCGS graded F12. Double Struck with Tab Indent Error. Head Left type. Slightly glossy olive and dark steel. The surfaces are mostly smooth and the details are consistent with a higher grade, but there are traces of microscopic roughness on both sides plus a half dozen small pits on the reverse and one on the obverse. This piece was struck 3 times on the obverse. Two of the strikes were reasonably well centered with an offset between impressions of about a half millimeter. Doubling shows on the date, legends, and all the devices on the obverse, but the reverse displays no trace of doubling. The other strike is a tab indent struck into the rim above NOV in NOVA where a blank planchet was struck against the obverse about 97% off center leaving a tab. The PCGS label notes this is a mint error with "Obv D/S & 3% Indented." The date and legends are complete and clear. A really neat mint error on the popular Head Left type. Listed on pages 70-1 in the "Redbook."
Estimated Value $300-UP.
