Clay, Henry. Boldly penned and signed, "H.Clay." Matted and framed with a portrait of the statesman to an overall size of 16½ x 12½". 1777-1852. American Statesman and Orator. Member and Speaker of the House of Representatives, active in bringing on the War of 1812 with Great Britain. US Senator (1831-42), who earned the title of "the great pacificator" for his attempts to hold the Union together in the face of the divisive issue of slavery.

Autograph Letter Signed as US Senator. One page, Quarto, New Port, August 11, 1850. To prominent Washington District Attorney P.R. Fendall (1794-1868). Interesting letter regarding a legal case, which Clay is anxious to steer away from mishandling. Clay instructs the District Attorney.

" …I am glad that you have obtained possession of the papers in the case of Mr. Ray, and that you propose to give them an attentive examination. I wish that you would give your attention, among other things, to the point whether they are in such authentic form as that they can be legitimately received in evidence before the commissioner… ".

Very Fine.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
