Lot 1108

1856-D. NGC graded MS-61. A key date issue and among the rarest of all Dahlonega gold, particularly as in this lofty grade. Mint State examples of this date and mint are generally prohibitive, and we are proud to offer this splendid Mint State-61 example, which is just a hair's breath from the finest seen of this issue. The U of UNITED is well struck, as most examples of this date scarcely show this letter at all, similarly the 5 in the date is well formed. The diagnostic "filled" O in DOLLAR is present, likely from a chipped die. Attractive surfaces and one of the highlights of this advanced collection. Perhaps as many as 95 exist in all grades per CoinFacts, this one towers above all but a few known. Well up in the Condition Census for this date and mint, so a powerful coin that no specialist should overlook. Mostly well struck, lustrous and untoned. Only 1,460 struck. Pop 2; 3 finer in 62. (PCGS # 7543) Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

Realized $24,000
