George III (1760-1820). Gold Sovereign, 1820, second laureate head right with more wiry hair, date below with open 2, Latin legend commences lower left GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:, Rev. St George and dragon right, incuse BP below broken lance at lower left for designer and engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, garter motto surrounding, buckle with incuse WWP for Master of the Mint William Wellesley Pole, French motto HONI. SOIT. QUI. MAL. Y. PENSE., edge milled (Schneider 630; Bentley 942; Marsh 4; S.3785C; Fr.371; KM.674). Toned, has been graded and slabbed by PCGS as AU58, only 33 out of a total of 88 pieces are currently graded finer and that are this particular variety; for comparison at NGC there are only 42 graded finer out of 128 pieces but they do not go into date varieties currently. PCGS certification 206880.58/81493192. Calendar year mintage 931,994. The Latin legends translate on obverse as "George III by the Grace of God, King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith." The older Norman-French legend on the reverse translates as "Evil to him, who evil thinks" and is the motto of the chivalric Order of the Garter founded in 1348 by King Edward III. June 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the introduction of the modern gold Sovereign.
