Tilden, Samuel J (1814-1886) Governor of New York; Democratic presidential candidate in 1876 who won the popular vote and lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes because of electoral vote bargaining by the Republicans. Sepia-tone Photograph Signed and dated ("Samuel J. Tilden Mar. 8th 1879"), n.p., 6½ x 4¼ inches. The albumen print, stamped by Sarony, New York, 1871, on the back, is cabinet size but is not mounted; it is inlaid to a sheet of 10 x 7 in. paper. There are several dot-like blemishes in the three-quarter portrait and a small closed tear at right edge. Very good.
