Lot 1067

Crete, Kydonia. Silver Stater (11.00 g), ca. 320-270 BC. Head of Artemis Diktynna left, wearing a ivy wreath. Reverse: KYΔΩN, the archer Kydon standing left, stringing his bow. Svoronos 24; cf. Le Rider pl. X, 5; Traeger Coll. 220; cf. Philipson Coll. 1478 (same dies?). Very Rare. Lightly toned. Fine / Very Fine. Estimate Value $500 - 550
From the Lee Rousseau Collection; Ex Künker 226 (11 March 2013), 412; Hirsch 181 (22 February 1994), 189.
Ancient Kydonia was centered around the present day harbor area and Kastelli Hill, and its excavated archaeological remains are largely stored in the Chania Archaeological Museum. The principal motif of the flag of Chania, just like the reverse of the very rare stater offered here, shows the hero Kydon stringing his bow.

Realized $312
