Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson ALS to Col. Martin Scanlon, Special Assistant to the US Ambassador to the UK. Wallis Simpson (1896-1986) Duchess of Windsor was an American socialite and central to King Edward's Abdication in December of 1936. Letter is written to Col. Martin Scanlon, a US Officer of considerable reputation and was special assistant to the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from April to September 1939, when he became the military attaché. Letter is written on 3 pages of stationery with the beautiful Royal Madras Yacht Club embossed flags logo and the name M.Y. Gulzar, likely whose yacht the couple were sailing on. Simpson writes that she is "enjoying idling along the coast of Italy, but I laugh as we are both almost too tired to enjoy anything." She also mentions she loves being away "to avoid shooting all decorators and servants". Finally she appreciates photos sent and "how homesick they make them feel". This letter was written just at the couple's one year wedding anniversary (possibly the motivation for the cruise) and eight months after their controversial meeting with Adolph Hitler. 6½ x 5" 3 pp. recto verso, with original envelope postmarked July 17, 1938. Near to mint condition. Estimated Value $500 - UP

Realized $320
