Lot 1428
1854 $3 Gold NGC MS62. NGC graded MS-62. Lightly toned. Housed in an Old Style Holder. This is the first year of issue of this denomination, which continued in production through 1889. Always popular for the unusal stated value of $3, but this was based on a sheet of 3 cent stamps, which could be purchased 100 stamps at a time for $3 of course. Satiny luster in the fields and attractive for the grade assigned (PCGS # 7969) Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900

1880 $3 Gold PCGS Proof 64. PCGS graded Proof 64. Lovely light golden toning. Only 36 struck in proof of which perhaps 25 to 30 exist today. This is one of the finer examples with clasic orange peel texture in the fields and ample frost on the devices. The Indian headdress on Liberty is a classic design by famed mint engraver James B. Longacre which is paired with the open agricultural wreath on the reverse. However, the $3 denomination was finding little acceptance by 1880 so the mintage in Proofs was indeed quite tiny. Survivors are sparse and demand far exceeds the number available. An important example that should not be overlooked by specialists. Pop 7; 1 finer in 65 (PCGS # 8044) Estimated Value $18,000 - 19,000

Lot 1436
1881 $3 Gold PCGS PF64 DC. PCGS graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. This is a tough date with only 54 pieces minted, of which perhaps 50 survive. The majority of the known coins offer the regular contrast without the Cameo or Deep Cameo depth of contrast. Of the known proofs listed in the PCGS Population Report only five coins have the depth of contrast found here, and when the deep mirror fields are present these gold coins show exceptional eye appeal. The devices are all bathed in mint frost while the fields show amazing reflectivity. The effect of the Deep Cameo contrast is simply dazzling and mesmurising. Add to this the true rarity of this date and you have a totally winning combination. Don't miss this opportunity if you have been seeking a high end coin. Pop 2; 3 finer, 1 in 65, 2 in 66 (PCGS # 98045) Estimated Value $25,000-UP

1885 $3 Gold NGC MS62. NGC graded MS-62. Light golden toning with reflective fields on both sides. Only 801 struck as demand for these coins continued to diminish. In the end, collectors today truly enjoy them and many date sets are being assembled. Finding a nice mint state example like this takes patience, as so few are offered. Here is an opportunity! Pop 18; 31 finer, 1 in 62+, 10 in 63, 16 in 64, 4 in 65. (PCGS # 8007) Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500
