A Symphony of Musicians, Conductors & Composers. Seven items: 1) Pablo Casals, autograph letter signed, in French, 7 x 4¼ in., 2 pages, Paris, December 11, 1902. 2) Harry James, MCA publicity still photograph signed, 10" x 8", black & white glossy, no place, c. 1940s - 1950s. Ethel Leginska vintage photograph signed, 5½" x 3½", n.p., c. 1930s. Lily Pons, signature on a University of Washington Concert Program, 8" x 5½", Seattle, October 20. Rudolf Serkin, autograph letter signed, 1 page, 5½" x 7½", no place, Nov. 3, 1989. With photograph inscribed and signed, 6" x 4", black & white glossy, no place, Nov. 3, 1989. Arturo Toscanini signature on a 3" x 5" card, affixed with a commemorative postage stamp of the Smithsonian, no place, August 21, 1940; framed to an overall size of 13½" x 9". Bruno Walter autograph letter signed, 1 page, Berlin, October, 2, 1931; vertical area of paper loss affects several words of text. Remainder of lot is in very good condition.

Berlin, Irving. Typed letter signed, 1 page, 11 x 7¼ in., no place, Jan. 2, 1943. To Mr. Walton, in part: "…I often wondered what happened to the music we created and shipped out to the bands in the A[merican] E[xpeditionary] F[orces] during the last war and it was a great source of satisfaction to know that it really arrived and was used…I was one of a committee of three to choose this music…and I personally supervised the packing…the Armistice came right in the middle of it." Together with a program from the Grand Opera House in Belfast signed "Irving Berlin" for Berlin's Overseas Tour of "This is the Army," 4 pages, Belfast (Ireland); the program is for Jan. 13, 1944. Age wear; signature is somewhat faded. All 150 cast members were soldiers, all enlisted men attended free of charge, and all monies from the UK tour went to British service charities. On October 2, 1945, President Truman and General George Marshall awarded Berlin the Army's Medal of Merit in appreciation of his music and lyrics to "This is the Army."

Glazunov, Alexander. Autograph letter signed (A. Glazunov) in Cyrillic script, 1 page, in Russian, on letterhead printed "Director Petrograd Conservatory," Being a recommendation for musician, composer, and conductor Myron Isaakovich Jacobson, saying that he is a talented and educated musician and highly praising him as a composer and performer. "By virtue of his talent and his total dedication to his art he can be of great service to musical affairs in Russia." With a second autograph letter signed (writer unidentified) in Russian with letterhead printed "Inspector Spb [Saint Petersburg] Conservatory," 1912, being an invitation for Jacobson to come to the writer's house. Glazunov was director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1905-1917.

Liszt, Franz (1811-1886) Influential Hungarian composer and piano virtuoso. Card inscribed and signed ("J. Liszt"), 2¾ x 4¼ in., in German, no place, no date. Inscribed to Fraulein Fastlinger. Some age toning along lower margin. Affixed to a 8¼ x 6¾ in. album leaf.

Rubinstein, Anton (1829-1894) Russian pianist, composer and conductor who became a pivotal figure in Russian culture when he founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Rubinstein was a prolific composer throughout much of his life. He wrote 20 operas, the best known of which is "The Demon." He also composed a large number of other works, including five piano concertos, six symphonies, a large number of solo piano works along with a substantial output of works for chamber ensemble. Autograph musical quotation signed ("Ant. Rubinstein"), 1 page, 4½" x 6¼", Berlin, December 7, 1883. This very attractive musical quote features four bars from an unnamed Rubinstein work. Boldly signed. Age toned with several edge chips and a slight tear in the bottom left border. Backed on soft board. Very good condition.

Shchedrin, Rodion (1932 -) Russian composer. Booklet inscribed to Marc Reschetnik and signed, 7¾ x 10¼ in., May 9, 1956. The booklet is an addition to a Soviet art magazine called "Art of the Young Composers." An anthology of works by five Russian composers, Shchedrin's contribution, a "Ballade," is the longest work in the booklet (10 pages). There is a second inscription to Reschetnik and signature, which seems to be by Edouard Denisot, also on the title page, dated Mar. 29, 1957.
